An exhibition featuring the works of Christian Tamondong on the Exuberance of Life

Of Mirth and Misery presented by Art Sentral Asia in cooperation with iPreciation, and supported by Borneo Motors/Toyota Motor and Royal Plaza on Scotts showcases Christian Tamondong’s unique style that appropriates the colors and forms of children’s art.

The exhibition which runs from June 16 to 25 at the iPreciation, Fullerton Hotel, features Christian's works, that evoke the atmosphere of curious playgrounds where playing comes side-by-side with scuffling, friends go together with enemies and where life’s kindergarten lessons on fairness, hurt and triumph are taught over and over again – in scabs.

Tamondong’s paintings are characterized by strong, vibrant colors applied in their purest intensity, oftentimes appearing as flat forms and fields. Intimations of innocent spontaneity appear through freely applied streaks of crayons and oil sticks and through casually controlled acrylic drippings and washes.

But Tamondong’s child-like style serves a double entendre: while the forms appear naïve, his themes are thoughtful meditations on life’s basic problems. Of Mirth and Misery presents the artist’s contemplations on the interdependency of happiness and sadness.

The multi-awarded Tamondong studied art at the Philippine Women’s University and lives and works in Cavite, the Philippines.

Filipino painter Christian Tamondong was born in Cavite in 1976. He took up painting at the Institure of Fine Arts and Design at the Philippine Women`s University. His early figurative works already display stylizations appropriated from children`s drawings. His first solo exhibits were held in 2003, displayed a move in to extreme stylization using flat forms and grounds, laying emphasis on highly saturated color fields that still forms the leitmotif od his work. A member of the group Anting-anting, he has won several National Art competitions.
