Balancing. The work deals with ideas of pressure, heat and force as it is manifested in bodily terms through the practice of self-harm and in the natural world using demonstrations of physical phenomena. The show consists of small paintings in tempera on gesso; cast stainless steel sculptures; sculptures in vacuum-formed plastic and a series of new video works.
Balancing
Cecily Brennan’s new show, Balancing, is a culmination of a series of exhibitions on related themes, which have been seen in the Taylor Galleries, in the Nuova Icona Gallery in Venice, and in Finland. These shows have looked at issues of damage and repair and the evidence of pressure and heat on the body through skin diseases.
The most recent work deals with ideas of pressure, heat and force as it is manifested in bodily terms through the practice of self-harm and in the natural world using demonstrations of physical phenomena.
Balancing consists of small paintings in tempera on gesso; cast stainless steel sculptures; sculptures in vacuum-formed plastic and a series of new video works made especially for OBG. These videos explore a number of themes, such as armouring, protection, instability and aspects of melancholia.
Cecily Brennan describes her new work as,
“involved and concerned with representations of pressure - geological, physical and emotional. With the ‘Hero’s Engine’, for example, heat and energy are converted into motion and agitation demonstrating in physical and visual terms the changes that happen in the body when it is under stress and pressure.â€
