Transmutation of Vision and Resonance

The University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong is pleased to present the exhibition 'Transmutation of Vision and Resonance: The Works of Leung Kui Ting', featuring twenty mixed-media installations incorporating ink paintings.

Leung was born in Guangzhou and studied painting under Lui Shou Kwan (1919–1975). Much inspired by Lui's New Ink Painting theory, Leung combines theories of modern Western art and graphic design. Through years of searching, experimentation, and creative endeavours, he has created a type of installation that is located between the traditional and the modern, using ink painting produced with his unique brush skills. He has established a new direction for modern Chinese Ink Painting in Hong Kong.

The artist seeks to refer back to tradition while grasping the modern. In the exhibition, one can easily see Leung's maturity in combining geometric forms and abstract painting and his interest in the treatment of space. Elements in the paintings are related to the space corresponding to concrete objects in the installation so that harmony between the flat painting surface and the three-dimensional installation can be achieved. With this aim, the objects, their shapes, materials and symbolic implications, are carefully considered during artist's creative process. The artist combines elements of East and West, new and old, concrete and abstract, visible and invisible, perfectly into one. Leung's emphasis on traditional Chinese culture, manifested through Western aesthetics is particularly evident in his evocation of nature in line.

The exhibition preview will take place on Tuesday 5 July 2005 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Museum.
