Special screenings: Anna Sanders Film Tour
July 14 and 15, 2005, 9 pm
KW Institute for Contemporary Art will host Anna Sanders Film Tour. Anna
Sanders Films is the name of a film production company based in Paris,
founded in 1997 by Charles de Meaux, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Pierre
Huyghe and Philippe Parreno. Anna Sanders Films has blazed a trail for a new
breed of cinema oscillating between document and fiction, between reality
and memory, between time and its image. The program comprises of screenings of almost all the films ever produced by Anna Sanders. The screenings will be presented by the curators of the ASF
programme and the authors of the book 'Anna Sanders Films. The In-Between' -
Mathieu Copeland and Agnieszka Kurant.
"Anna Sanders is at the forefront of the current convergence of visual art
and cinema. Her films, hovering in an in-between - in between cinemas,
landscapes, dreams and economies - share a general fascination with
exploring our world, and its relationship with personal narratives.
Constantly oscillating between reality and fiction, document and subjective
memory, mental and visual image, off-screen and on screen, these films
present themselves as footnotes on the margins of reality and of the film
history. Combining stunning, often sensual, imagery with constant
questioning of the cinema, the films of Anna Sanders retain a cool distance
from their subjects creating a space for the viewer to become immersed in
the beauty of images and their meaning. The central question for the authors
becomes a desire to portrait a landscape as one would make the portrait of a
person, in other words, trying to discover how to tell the world nowadays.
The films of ASF involve the beholders in the creation of the depicted
places absent from themselves and make them constitute the ultimate status
of the images by regarding them as fiction, document or reality; present,
past or future. They allow us to constantly participate in the image. Anna
Sanders is the name of a character in a film currently being written. It is
a dream about the future which has already happened."
