T.G. Fernald and Margaret W. Gallegos
T.G. Fernald will be exhibiting new still-life and family portrait paintings
and drawings in her upcoming show. The artist approaches her subjects with
humor and compulsiveness as she examines the bizarreness of our daily lives.
Fernald says her new work ''delves into mind numbing, boringly fanatical
mundane urban reality of everyday coping. The good hearted, well intended
dysfunctional poses of family and possessions are painted with the
obsessiveness of an irritating itch that only laughter can temporarily
alleviate.''
T.G. Fernald is a graduate of California State University, Long Beach
(M.F.A.) and California College of Arts and Crafts (B.F.A.).
Margaret W. Gallegos will be exhibiting self-portraits executed over the
past thirty years. While it is common practice for artists to do
self-portraits, it is rare that they show them together. This exhibition
will provide the opportunity to observe the artist's development over the
years, to see the shifts in styles and the changes in her state of mind
toward her real subject: painting and portraits. Gallegos states of doing
self-portraits, 'To my mind the genre has infinite possibilities while
providing valuable, possibly inadvertent, insights and revelations. I
expect that, intentionally or not, these works do reveal change, growth,
transformation and probably even maturation and decay. Whether or not they
show progressive development they do represent the struggle to attain it and
though progress may be halting or uneven, the exploration and the struggle
will probably continue doggedly but happily to my end.
Margaret W. Gallegos is a graduate of the U.C.L.A. School of Fine Arts, and
has been exhibiting her work locally and nationally since 1983.
