They Live

Olaf Breuning's complex works suggestively combine elements of stage sets, film scenarios and theme parks; his mise en scene draw liberally from advertising, television and music videos and, as such, he has been likened to a director, using a vast array of images and references to contemporary culture.

Alongside a selection of Breuning¹s acclaimed photographic works produced between 1997 and 2005 (and exhibiting for the first time Peter, The Dude, The Dog and The Bird and We Are Such Animals, all 2005), we are delighted to be the first UK venue to present HOME (2004), a film made during a twelve-month round-the-world trip undertaken by Breuning in 2003. The two projection surfaces (one colour and one black & white) shift the viewer¹s attention between the life of a young man who, at the same time, provides the narrative framework as a navigational tool; and a screen from which images emerge, drawn from the darkness by the narrator¹s voice.

The main actor in HOME personifies a sense of homelessness, moving through locations as diverse as New York and Machu Picchu, in search of the slightest sense of Œhome¹.

Olaf Breuning was born in Switzerland and now lives and works in New York. This exhibition, that coincides with a solo show of new work at Chisenhale Gallery, London (2 September 25 October 2005), will be his first solo presentation in the UK.

A catalogue, featuring texts by Martin Herbert and Adam Sutherland, has been produced by Chapter to accompany the exhibitions at Chapter and Chisenhale. For press copies please contact Hannah Firth on 029 2031 1055 or email hannah.firth@chapter.org
