Love in La. Recent Paintings
A solo exhibition of recent works by Los Angeles artist David Early explore
the multiple dimensions associated with LOVE and one's own perception of
this powerful emotion. Revealing not only love's affection for another his
paintings also remind us of a loveless connection associated with
environment and how a particular geographical location can often influence
one¹s romantic notions. Los Angeles' connection to LOVE become blurred as
feelings of tension, rejection, bliss, happiness, togetherness, loneliness,
insecurity, security, jealousy, respect, loyalty, fulfillment, rage,
passion, anxiety, tenderness, sadness, grief, despair, emptiness, kindness,
distraction, acceptance, pain and joy, to name a few, help to define the
artists observation of this magnetic power. Among the many forms of LOVE,
drug abuse, rape, addictions to surgery, eating, and of course sex are
brought to the forefront in his oil paintings on masonite.
The majority of the paintings in this exhibit are set upon the landscapes of
Paris, France, where his Los Angeles subjects almost float in oblivion
amidst the 19th century space that surrounds them. Influenced by the L'Ecole
de Paris artists (1904-1929) such as Paul Outerbridge and Man Ray, Early's
swift Film Noir painting technique coupled with his manipulation of
photocopies help the viewer to evaluate their own perception of the one
emotion apparently no one should live without, LOVE.
LOVE in LA is David Early's second show with L2kontemporary.
