Joseph Beckles, Douglas C. Bloom and Jason Macaya
Lawrence Asher Gallery presents new works by local Southern California artists Joseph Beckles, Douglas C. Bloom and Jason Macaya. Two of southern California's most original and talented young contemporary painters, Mr. Macaya and Mr. Bloom play off one another with magnetic allure.
Fresh lively colors and highly imaginative scenes lead you into their worlds thenallow you to complete the journey with your own experience and interpretation. These wunderkinds join forces with wood and steel master sculptor Joseph Beckles, who takes you on a similar, important trip through a garden of forged, bent steel executed with wild precision. Please join us for an artists' reception on Saturday, September 10th, from 6 to 10pm. The exhibition will continue through Saturday, October 8th.
Joseph Beckles - For over 20 years Joseph has used his keen sense of observation and insight to create sculptures, first with wood and now withsteel. Mr. Beckles derives his greatest sense of satisfaction during the creative process rather than in the finished work. A technique of his
artistry is to expose a variety of possibilities in the developmental stages of a project. He then births blends, shapes, and mixtures to realize new figurative and abstract creations.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1951, Mr. Beckles and his family moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1961. He completed one year of undergraduate studies at Lincoln University, then transferred to Brooklyn College. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977, he relocated to Los Angeles, California.
Mr. Beckles has exhibited and is collected across the United States, Central America, the Caribbean and Senegal.
Douglas C. Bloom  Mr. Bloom was born in Houston, Texas in 1970. He completed his BFA from the University of Houston in 1998 and received his MFA from Claremont Graduate University in 2001. Since then, Douglas has been mastering his unique style of contemporary American imagery in an
affected, photo-realistic style. His excellent use of color as well as his distinct and popular subject matter, offer timeless works with a modern signature.
His work has appeared throughout the United States in distinctive group shows and publications as local curators and critics continue to laud him with praise and acknowledgment of his creations.
Jason Macaya - Jason Macaya spent much of his youth surrounded by abundant natural beauty. Born in California and raised on the West Coast (from Santiago de Chile to Portland, Oregon), he earned a BA in Theatre Arts at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He currently lives in
the expansive, enigmatic city of Los Angeles where canyons of concrete multiply endlessly and seas of people teem in wary symbiosis. Ever observant of his surroundings, Jason utilizes the colors, lines, and light of his past and present environments to create stained glass-like tableaus evoking the ubiquitous conflict of Man vs. Nature. In addition, Jason¹s distinct style
has made an impact on several commercial design projects.
