Federico Herrero

Blow de la Barra, London

New paintings. Artist's work defies common classifications of painting: from painting expressionist canvases of his mental landscapes, to completing unfinished pedestrian lines in the street, to painting pedestrian crossings inside the gallery, luscious landscapes over walls, and world maps within swimming pools. His most recent works have consisted of the application of this paint over real life surfaces: buses, patios, buildings and walls.

comunicato stampa

Detmar Blow and Pablo León de la Barra are pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Federico Herrero.

Federico Herrero’s work defies common classifications of painting: from painting expressionist canvases of his mental landscapes, to completing unfinished pedestrian lines in the street, to painting pedestrian crossings inside the gallery, luscious landscapes over walls, and world maps within swimming pools. Herrero does not differentiate between the size of the brush, the kind of paint, and the type and size of the surface. His interest in paint resides in the basic act of painting: the application of coloured pigment over surfaces. His most recent works have consisted of the application of this paint over real life surfaces: buses, swimming pools, patios, buildings and walls. In doing so he opposes traditional notions of space, opening them up to new possibilities.

Federico Herrero was born in San Jose, Costa Rica in 1978, where he lives and works. In 2001 at the 49th Venice Biennale he was awarded the Golden Lion for the best artist under 35. Herrero has also participated at the Aichi World Expo 2005, Nagoya, Japan where he painted three swimming pools; the 1st Seville Biennial, Seville, Spain, 2004, (curated by Harold Szeemann); Puerto Rico 04 Art Biennial, San Juan, Puerto Rico, 2004; the 8th Havana Biennial, Havana, Cuba, 2003; and Urgent Painting, Musee d’ Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, 2002 (curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist). Recent solo shows include Federico Herrero, Sies + Höke Galerie, Düsseldorf, 2005; Japanopera, Gallery Koyanagi, Tokyo, 2004; and Mental Landscapes, Galeria Juana de Aizpuru, Madrid, 2003. Other projects include painting public transport buses as part of the Art Bus Proyect in Kanazawa and Yamagata, Japan, and painting the dinning room at the Lydmar Hotel, Stockholm. His work was included in Vitamin P: New Perspectives in Painting, published by Phaidon in 2002. He also participated in the publication and e-flux project The Next Documenta Should Be Curated By an Artist, published by Revolver in 2004 and curated by Jens Hoffmann.
