An exhibition of contemporary products and objects created by alumni of University of the Arts London with a focus on innovative use of materials
From highly polished, concrete wall panels by Petr Weigl, to Margo Selby's sumptuous Silk Bubblewrap cushions and throws, Materialize gathers together innovatively formed objects and products created by designers who studied at one of the five Colleges that make up University of the Arts London.
Nicola Malkin, whose luxurious, super-sized jewellery has been purchased by the likes of Dawn French, is exhibiting a giant, ceramic charm bracelet with trinkets the size of grapefruit. She says 'These pieces tell my story of moments, feelings and aspirations. The bracelets will never be complete and should have new biographic charms influenced by future owners, collected and hung over time'.
Of a more wearable size is Jacqueline Cullen's award-winning Whitby jet jewellery. The material she uses, formed from 180 million year old fossilised wood, is almost solely associated with Victorian mourning jewellery. With the very contemporary pieces in this exhibition she aims to, 'subvert these ideas physically, technically and traditionally'.
Heather Weston gained an MA in Book Arts at Camberwell College of Arts, after previously working in psychiatric and psychotherapy research. Both of her interests combine in her incredible hand-made books, one of which entitled READ (past tense), reflects on the experience of blushing. Heat sensitive ink reacts to the reader's contact with the page to reveal intimate texts between the more readily visible lines.
All of the exhibitors are alumni of the University and were chosen by a panel of industry professionals for their innovative and skilful use of materials, their commitment to their working practice and their originality of design. Members of the panel were Helen Horten-Smith, London Design Festival Co-ordinator; Beatrice Mayfield, Professional Development Officer at the Crafts Council; and Kylie Turner, product designer and alumnus of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
