California Gold
The Tobey C. Moss Gallery presents CALIFORNIA GOLD, an exhibition of
highlights illustrated in our newest catalogue, to be published September
2005.
The catalogue and exhibition highlight the wonderful and diverse art and
artists of California, with a particular focus upon the artists of Los
Angeles, whose influences can be felt in the works of contemporary artists.
The earliest piece featured is a rare work by REX SLINKARD (Nude, pencil
drawing, 1915), an early harbinger of Modernism who died very young in the
flu epidemic of 1918. We also include works by GORDON WAGNER, GEORGE HERMS,
JOHN BERNHARDT that reflect the evolution of the 'California Assemblage'
movement. Herms' assemblage, Clue To, is an homage to the great jazz
pianist Dodo Marmarosa. Glowing colors in YNEZ JOHNSTON's painting,
Journey without End, transports her viewers to mystical sites. An early
placid still life by FREDERICK HAMMERSLEY vies with a shocking cultural
scene by JOHN LANGLEY HOWARD.
The exhibition will also span the media with paintings by Leonard Edmondson, Lorser Feitelson, Helen Lundeberg, Stanton Mcdonald-Wright, John Mclaughlin, Lee Mullican; sculpture by Charles Arnoldi and Peter Krasnow; watercolors by Nicholas P. Brigante and David P. Levine; collages by Betye Saar and Emerson Woelffer; prints by Lee Chesney, Werner Drewes and Clinton Adams, the latter being one of the first artists to work at the Tamarind
Lithography Workshop in 1960, eventually becoming its director in 1970.
Catalogues are available at $25, plus any applicable tax and/or shipping.
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 15, 6-8pm
