Performance Art, Video Art & Photography Exhibition will open at the new art space instinc.

LadyFest Singapore (previously known as GirlFest Singapore) is a non-profit group that aims to provide the artistic Singaporean Lady Scene of the past, present and future a place to call their own.

The group aims to recognize and be a platform for female talent in Singapore. Musical events organized by the group will feature/have been featuring local musical groups that have one or more female talents. This year LadyFest Singapore is collaborating with Coulere Studios (Arts & Design company) in promoting the arts; photography, art performance, video works and poetry.

A group of photographers, video artists and performance artists will display their works surrounding the theme “Do”. The artists are Tang Ling Nah, Geogianna Phua, Andree Weschler, Marienne Yang, Ling, Dewi Marie Vincoy, Nurr and Yeo Shih Yun from Singapore. There will be two performance artists, Rose A Rahim and guitarist, Shima Idris both from Singapore. In addition, there are overseas artists like Louise Dahl-Lindvall(Sweden), Angel Zhou (Indonesia) and Peng-Ean Khoo(Malaysia).

What’s a theme like DO?
DO HAVE FUN. That’s what a girl’s got to do!

About the selected artists

Andree Weschler was formerly a French language teacher who has pursued studies of ine Arts at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Curtin University of Technology of Western Australia, Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris. She studied Western painting and Chinese painting but in her practice Andree Weschler has refused to limit herself to any particular media. Any media is possible, but she concedes that much of the approach of an artist towards the media can be repetitive. It represents what she calls “the bad habits” of an artist. She therefore typically works and combines: Drawing-Installation-Video-Photography-Sound-Performance.
Andree Weschler is interested in the idea of a body socially cleaned and purified, a body treated as a wax that is shaped up, modeled and finally molded into a social form. Andree Weschler has mainly exhibited in Asia, notably in Singapore, Japan and Korea.

Louise Dahl-Lindvall was born in Sweden in 1983. She has always had an interest in art, but it took until the year after my high school graduation for her to realize this was not just another hobby to engage myself and my spare time in. She started out in printmaking and then moved on to painting and photography. During my one year in Kyrkeruds folkhögskola (Sweden), she experienced breakthrough in her practice, and also discovered her true devotion to creativity. She was accepted into LaSalle SIA level one painting this year, and hopes to advance further so she can become the self supporting, independent artist she wishes to be.

Georgiana Phua began drawing on walls as a toddler to her parents’ dismay. Good for them that she progressed to colouring and drawing on paper, leading to the possession of her first camera, which was a prize from a colouring competition. She delights in richness of colour, focused details of monochromes, simplicity of everyday sightings, complex layers of human emotions and the aging urban environment. She graduated with a Distinction from Lasalle College of the arts in 2005 and has exhibited in many shows like ' New Wave One-Moving in Time' at Yaddo Gallery and Eye é City- A Visual Account of the Last 24 hours of 2003' at MICA.

Tang Ling Nah has a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) with Distinction from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University. In 2002, she held her first solo exhibition, activated C, showcasing her charcoal drawings of urban spaces in Singapore. Through her works, Tang seeks to reflect and address the conditions of the modern city, particularly the lack of interpersonal intimacy in urban life. In June 2003, she travelled to Western Sydney with nine other Singapore artists for an artists exchange project which culminated in a collaborated exhibition titled Potluck. Besides her own art practice, she has also coordinated several exhibitions, including 10:10, the artists exchange project co-hosted by The Substation Ltd and Plastique Kinetic Worms, Singapore, and Deriving Spaces, an affiliate project of Nokia Singapore Art 2001–2. Most recently, she curated Cinepolitans: Inhabitants of a Filmic City, a visual arts exhibition at Jendela, Esplanade-Theatres on the Bay. She is a part-time lecturer at LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, Singapore, where she conducts the Foundation Drawing Workshop and Art History tutorials, and Life Drawing at Diploma level. She has just recently been selected as a finalist for the Singapore-ASEAN Art Awards 2003. She is a winner of the Della Butcher Award 2000, and received an Honourable Mention at the Philip Morris Singapore Art Awards 2001/2. Two of her works were also highly commended at the 20th UOB Painting of the Year 2001.

Marienne Yang recently graduated with Bachelor of Fine Arts (High Distinction) from University of Tasmania, majoring in Electronic Media in 2004. She has exhibited widely in Australia and Singapore. She is a member of The Artist Village since 2005. Her recent show includes 'Ring around the rosy, pocketful of posies…' at Your Mother Gallery.

Shih Yun's fascination for the abstract medium surfaced during her time at Lasalle, when she first experimented with the fusion of fine arts and contemporary design. One of her early experimental works received acclaim as a highly commended entry for the UOB Painting of the Year competition in 1999, which spurred her to further explore fine arts and the abstract form. After graduating from Lasalle, Shih Yun attended the one-year Post Baccalaureate Program (Painting) at the San Francisco Art Institute.

Shih Yun has collaborated with artists from America and UK for the past four years and has held numerous exhibitions in Singapore and Australia. Some of her recent exhibitions include “exit” in Melbourne, Australia and “NewFinds 2003" at MITA ARTrium. In addition, she was awarded the Emerging Artist Grant from the National Arts Council to hold her first solo exhibition titled, “log:one03” at Block 43 Studio Gallery in 2003.
