Architekturmuseum der Technischen Universitat
Tesar's architecture has a completely self-contained concept and character: for him an architect's work does not begin with the designing and planning associated with the implementation of a building contract, but with the question of what precedes form. The exhibition presents sketches, paintings, drawings, models and other objects.
Architecture begins before it is architecture
The Austrian architect Heinz Tesar is the poet and artist among the
major contemporary architects. His work eludes the usual architectural
categories and preconceptions. Buildings like, for example, the theater
in Hallein (1993), the Sammlung Essl in Klosterneuburg (1999) and the
church in Vienna’s Donaucity (2000) are singular works in the
architectural world that have met with both praise and contention.
Tesar’s architecture has a completely self-contained concept and
character: for him, an architect’s work does not begin with the
designing and planning associated with the implementation of a building
contract, but with the question of what precedes form, how forms emerge
and how they change in spatial contexts. Through the use of sketches,
watercolors and models he explores spatial potential before the actual
formation of physical structures. This reflection on and articulation of
individual form determination is contrary to architectural trends or
excessive self-portrayal. All-encompassing correlations are sought,
which generate adapted and attuned spaces that are individually related
to task and place.
With sketches, paintings, drawings, models and other objects the
Architekturmuseum der TU Munchen will present the first comprehensive
exhibition dealing with Heinz Tesar’s work. The three gallery spaces of
the Architecture Museum will be organized in the theme-related groups
"Praearchitektur / Prearchitecture", "KlangLichtRaume /
SoundLightSpaces" and "Schichtungen - Stadtebau / Layering - Urban
Planning". "Prearchitecture" refers to Tesar’s assessment that
"architecture begins before it is architecture." Here his works will be
shown as they relate to the search for form and space .
"SoundLightSpace" will deal with Tesar’s individual interior designs as
they comply with the ideal of illuminated interiors and sound
structures. "Layering - Urban Planning" will present Tesar’s specific
way of working buildings into extant and fixed structures.
The exhibition will be accompanied by the publication "Heinz Tesar -
Architektur" (Electa Verlag /Milan; in German and Italian) with ca. 300
pages and ca. 600 mostly color illustrations. (35 €).
On Friday, November 25, 2005 at 18:00 Friedrich Achleitner will hold a
talk about the exhibition in the Ernst vom Siemens Auditorium in the
Pinakothek der Moderne. The internationally renowned architectural
journalist has written about the work of his friend Heinz Tesar right
from the start and, in his unmistakable way, will analyze his
architecture, which "is concurrently a nuisance and a challenge for both
traditionalists and modernists."
