Australia…where?

Australia…where? is aimed at highlighting the multicultural nature of new media art in Australia - in Australia, exchanges witth Asia are often overshadowed by what are perceived as more important exchanges with Europe or the US – this program will try and combat and change this perception.

It will provide presentation, discussion and collaboration opportunities for Australian (including Aboriginal) artists with an Asian interest/background. While oriented towards emerging Australian new media artists with an Asian background/interest, Australia…where? will also involve a limited number of innovative and established Asian new media artists, and work from this region, in order to foster skill and knowledge exchange and to further encourage cross-cultural exchange and collaboration in the new media arts between Australia and Asia.

Australia…where? will present screenings from OK Video (Indonesia), Bandung Video Art Festival (Indonesia), Thailand Media Art Festival (Thailand), screenings from Japanese video artists, an exhibition of Australian and Japanese artists influenced by Otaku, a performance by Japanese electronic artist Ove-Naxx, an online gallery of work by indigenous Australian artists, a panel exploring online art by indigenous communities in Australia and two panels exploring and developing initiatives for cross-cultural exchange and collaboration in the new media arts between Australia and Asia.

Electrofringe is delighted to be able to present a screening program from Thailand MAF which we hope will help develop audiences in Australia and promote more interest in the artists, work and festivals from this region. Please see www.electrofringe.net for information on the festival and Thailand MAF’s involvement.

In return Electrofringe will provide Thailand MAF with a screening program from Electrofringe 04/05 for screening at Thailand MAF 06 – it is hoped that this cross-festival partnership will help develop cross-cultural interest and collaboration in the media arts between Australia and Thailand/SE Asia.

Electrofringe is a festival of digital, electronic and new media arts. Its focus is on emergent forms and techniques within media based arts practice and places a particular emphasis on encouraging young and emerging artists to interact with established artists.

This year Electrofringe will take place from 29 September - 3 October 2005 in the regional centre of Newcastle, NSW over 5 days and nights.RE:

The festival format is one of hands on workshops, panel discussion, masterclasses, presentations, exhibitions and screenings. It brings together artists, media makers, technicians, scientists, academics, cultural commentators, critics and enthusiasts working with a broad range of new media including; interactive video (Cinema, DVD, installation, spatio-temporal projection, CD-ROM), live audio visual performance, streaming media and web content, broadband initiatives, networked collaborations, web mediated events, surround sound practices, gestural interfaces, electronic music, custom electronics, wireless technologies and robotics.

The main aims and objectives of Electrofringe is to encourage growth and innovation in media based creative practices by engaging with artists, producers, participants and audiences.

Electrofringe showcases developments in an open and accessible manner by providing an informal platform for the exchange of information and techniques for young and emerging artists, as well as for a broader interested public. This is can be seen in the following initiatives.

In 2005 Electrofringe will continue to rigorously seek out and critically examine emerging practices in interactive media, online, and screen based arts. The 2005 festival will address amongst other topics - wireless and wearable technologies and their implications on art making; potentials for streaming media and broadband, interactive and reactive practices, media enhanced experiences and augmented realities; as well as the evolution of screen culture in the digital era.

We encourage critical discourse on theories of technology, information economies, networked and mediated societies, professional arts development and cultural strategies to ensure the development of new media and hybrid arts practices in Australia.
