Lawrence Weiner
WITHIN A REALM OF RELATIVE FORM
Location: 29 Bell Street

Lisson Gallery is delighted to announce its first solo exhibition with Lawrence Weiner. Lawrence Weiner is one of the most significant and iconic artists of our generation.
Throughout his practice he has pursued inquiries into language a radical redefinition of the artist/viewer relationship. Translating his investigations into linguistic structures and visual systems across varied formats and manifestations, he has produced books, films, videos, performances and audio works. The belief at the core of Lawrence Weiner's work is that art is a material reality between human beings and objects and between sets of objects in relation to human beings. Weiner considers language to be a sculptural material and believes that a construction in language can function as sculpture as adequately as a fabricated object. His statement of intent published in 1969 states: THE ARTIST MAY CONSTRUCT THE WORK THE WORK MAY BE FABRICATED THE WORK NEED NOT BE BUILT EACH BEING EQUAL AND CONSISTENT WITH THE INTENT OF THE ARTIST THE DECISION AS TO CONDITION RESTS WITH THE RECEIVER UPON THE OCCASION OF RECEIVERSHIP As a proposition or statement, each work need not be confined to an existence in one realised form, place or time but might be constructed in different contexts. Important recent solo exhibitions include: WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (1990); DISPLACEMENT, DIA Center for the Arts (1991-2); QUELQUES CHOSES, Musee d'Art Contemporarin, Bordeaux (1992); CHAINS WRAPPED AROUND ONE THING & ANOTHER BROKEN ONE BY ONE WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1992); Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (1994); Philadelphia Museum of Art (1994); AFTER ALL, Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin (2000); AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE, Cologne Kunstverein (2000); BENT AND BROKEN SHAFTS OF LIGHT, Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (2000-1). Lawrence Weiner will have a major display at Tate Modern in December 2005 and there will be retrospectives of his work at The Whitney Museum for American Art, New York in 2007 and Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art in 2008. A Phaidon monograph, including texts by Alexander Alberro, Alice Zimmerman and Benjamin Buchloh, is available. HAVING BEEN SAID: WRITINGS & INTERVIEWS OF LAWRENCE WEINER 1968-2003 published by Hatje Cantz in 2004.

Rodney Graham
Location: 52-54 Bell Street

Lisson Gallery is delighted to announce its 4th solo exhibition with Canadian artist and songwriter Rodney Graham. Graham is recognised internationally for his intellectually rigorous art, developed since the mid-seventies. His multi-layered and complex art includes photography, film, video, sculpture, music and text based works. It negotiates between many different identities and territories drawing connections between them, more specifically borrowing the language and isolated narratives from the worlds of science, film, pop culture and art history.

Rodney Graham is recognised for a rigorously intellectual art which ranges from photography, film, video and music to sculpture, painting and books. He often takes the study and alteration of classic works of 19th Century culture as a starting point, investigating both the specific roots of modernism as well as the creative potential of splicing fact together with fiction. The coherence of the final work often generates philosophical insights into hitherto unexplored subjects. Graham's latest show at the Lisson featured a large new video projection work entitled "City Self / Country Self". Set in Paris in the 1860’s, the film is part of a trilogy with "Vexation Island", 1997 and "How I became a Rambling Man", 1999. It was shot in 35 mm in the historic town of Senlis, near Paris, and deals with man and nature, city and country. In this work Graham plays two versions of himself, an urban dandy and a provincial rustic, two ‘paired particles’ set for a repeated, cataclysmic encounter played out within the long cinematic tradition of the ‘knockabout’ gag. In "Fishing on the Jetty", 2000, the artist plays Cary Grant in Hitchcock’s ‘To Catch a Thief.’ Graham has held a life-long preoccupation with rock music culture which has intensified in the last three years. In this time he has produced a number of remarkable music works including his video work "Rambling Man", 1998; a slide and music piece entitled "Aberdeen", 2000 after the birthplace of Kurt Cobain; A sound installation entitled "Listening Lounge II", 1999-2000; "A Little thought", 2000, a video clip for one of his own songs. It has also resulted in the release of two rock CDs written and performed by the artist to accompany his solo exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Vienna in 1999 and the Dia centre for the Arts, New York in 1999. A 10 inch record has just been released by the Kunstverein Munich. For his lastest show art the Lisson Graham released the EP "What is Happy, baby?". Graham’s work can be found in a number of public collections worldwide and has been shown in landmark exhibitions such as the 1987 Skulptur: Project in Munster, the Documenta IX in Kassel, Germany and the Venice Biennale 1997.
