Late paintings and prints. The paintings all mixed media on canvas, are drawn principally from the last decade of the artist's life, from the late 1980's through the 1990's. In these works, Boxer, combines such diverse materials as seeds, pebbles, string, glitter and roofing shingles with generous quantities of paint to create riotous mélanges of texture and color.

Madelyn Jordon Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings and selected prints by the renowned abstract painter Stanley Boxer. The artist, who enjoyed a highly successful and productive artistic career beginning in the 1960’s and continuing until his death in 2000, is represented in numerous major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
The paintings in the exhibition, all mixed media on canvas, are drawn principally from the last decade of the artist’s life, from the late 1980’s through the 1990’s. In these works, Boxer, a superb manipulator of surfaces, combines such diverse materials as seeds, pebbles, string, glitter and roofing shingles with generous quantities of paint to create riotous mélanges of texture and color. His exuberant surfaces animate the paintings. Child-like in their free association, yet sophisticated in their complexity, they delight the eye.
The artist, a superb draftsman, was equally comfortable in creating prints and sculpture. In 1979, he created “Carnival of Animals†at Tyler Graphic, a suite of fourteen etchings, inspired by the musical by Saint-Saens in 1886. Five intaglios from this rare portfolio will be on view, showing the artist’s extraordinary talent in another medium.
The exhibition will be on view through 2005.
