Art Fair

This year, everything's new at ART COLOGNE. That's because Germany's leading art fair is leaving the Rhineside Halls and moving into new halls on the Cologne exhibition grounds.

That's probably the most fundamental change the world's oldest art fair has experienced since it was founded in 1967. The move to these modern halls will not only provide a new setting for the fair and an enhanced quality of stay for all concerned – it will also enable the organizers to create an exciting and intriguing new constellation of gallery booths and special shows.

The number of participants will still be limited to approximately 250 internationally renowned galleries. They will be showing a comprehensive overview of 20th and 21st-century art – from classical modernism to the very latest contemporary works. The primary focus will be on classic works, postwar art and works of contemporary art. An integral part of ART COLOGNE will be "open space", a curated open exhibition area for contemporary art.

For 25 years now, an international programme for promoting young artists has been supported by the Federal Commissioner for Cultural and Media Affairs, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the city of Cologne and Koelnmesse.

The 25th anniversary of this programme, which is a fixed component of the concept behind ART COLOGNE, will be commemorated with a retrospective of its accomplishments.
Once again, new galleries will occupy an area of their own within ART COLOGNE. These galleries will be able to take part in the fair on the invitation of a jury of experts, thanks to funding provided by the cultural foundation of the Stadtsparkasse Köln.

In 2004, ART COLOGNE welcomed more than 70,000 visitors.

Open Space

This year’s ART COLOGNE (28 October to 1 November 2005) will feature an exhibition area called "Open Space."

The aim behind the ambitious project is to replace the traditional structure of enclosed booths for each exhibitor by creating a spacious open area for showcasing various media and art from selected galleries.

Here, visitors will encounter an unconventional, contemporary setting where they can browse, chat and — of course — make purchases. This area of the trade fair will be situated close to the stands of the leading international galleries for contemporary art. With its separate catering area it will offer high-quality service for all of the participants.

The intention of the project is to provide a communicative new presentation format that gives space to the needs of a well-informed, networked audience from around the world. At Open Space, the market will become a centre of business communication and more. Koelnmesse has commissioned Neumann + Luz to stage Open Space as part of ART COLOGNE. Concept and organisation: Neumann + Luz; advisor: Christian Nagel.

With ART COLOGNE relocating to new halls, Neumann + Luz have taken the opportunity to conduct a joint experiment to partially redefine the image of the fair and enhance it in line with today’s needs. The exhibition architecture, which was designed by Meyer Voggenreiter specifically for the event, is intended to provide an effective, stimulating setting.
