The Prop Makers
The Prop Makers consists of a series of painted filmic backdrops for as yet unrealised films. These backdrops provide the environment for a series of props and sculptures made by selected artists, film prop and special effects designers including Alix Harwood, Sarah Lucas, Tomb Raider, Ben Sadler, Stephen Beasley, Tim Bailey, Justine Blair, The Professionals, Edwin Wright, Colin Lowe, Data Repro, Rustam Khalfin and John Russell.
"From sugar crystal Cola bottles on fire; the May 68 barricades constructed from rutting balloon animals to Dan Graham's video pavilion caught in the eye-popping flash of an electrical storm, The Prop Makers suggests connective strands between gaming architecture and narratology, environmental dissent and the sandalwood scent of a brighter tomorrow." The Prop Makers has been co-produced and directed by Mark Beasley and Russell Oxley: the assembled cast of Prop Makers have previously produced work for HR Giger's, Alien; The Tate Modern and the Pink Floyd.
Mark Beasley's past projects include Beasley Street at Camden Arts Centre (with Stephen Beasley); The Thinking (with John Russell and LA film-maker Damon Packard) at PS1/MOMA, New York and Hey Hey Glossolalia at the Stanley Picker gallery, Kingston University, London. Past curated projects include Electric Earth, The Russian Museum, St Petersburg (British Council touring exhibition of film and video); AXXXPRESHUNISM, Vilma Gold, London and Infra thin Projects, Book Works, London. He is currently the Stanley Picker Research Fellow in Fine Art, at Kingston University, London.
Russell Oxley has worked as a scenic artist and painter within the film industry for over fifteen years. Within that time he has painted over 400 old master paintings and 2000 sets, working with film directors such as Nicolas Roeg and Michael Mann. His recent work includes Troy (Warner Brothers); Da Vinci Code (Rose Line); Alfie (Paramount) and The League of Gentlemen (BBC Films).
