comunicato stampa

Naked Spaces.

"Institutions impinge upon our lives from the cradle to the grave: schools, universities, prisons, hospitals and retirement homes. Their affect can be positive or negative. They both embrace and constrain us. They are a microcosm of the wider society; but they are something we do not escape."
(Patricia MacKinnon-Day)

Patricia MacKinnon-Day is an innovative artist whose work is concerned with public institutions and the people who once occupied them. In her new exhibition, Naked Spaces she presents two remarkable new installations, made after a period of research into Brynhyfryd, a former workhouse and hospital at Forden, near Montgomery in the Welsh Borders.

In one installation, wall-high sheets of Perspex, covered with a translucent wallpaper motif, are arranged to create a transparent ‘room’ within the gallery. In this artwork, MacKinnon-Day examines the institution’s provision of a domestic atmosphere for its residents. The room’s transparent walls can also be seen as a comment on the often-unavoidable lack of privacy in a large social institution. In another installation one hundred glass shelves line the gallery walls, each etched with a Christian name and holding a bar of soap.

Naked Spaces is an on-going project, and will also show at other major venues across the UK during 2001 and 2002. At each new venue MacKinnon-Day will research a local institution; factories, schools, hospitals, and make new site-specific work relating to the locality. Accompanied by a special publication that can be added to as the artist develops new works connected with the project.

Naked Spaces is supported by the Arts Council of Wales.
