Bishops University Art Gallery is proud to present the exhibition Video Art. An eclectic selection of videos by contemporary artists will run continuously in the Art Gallery. Two evenings dedicated to video projections at Centennial Theatre will also accompany the exhibition: Tuesday January 23rd at 7pm and Tuesday January 30th at 7pm. Come and discover different aspects relating to the history of video art, an art form, which emerged in the 1970s and has since become a well-established artistic medium.
The first video presentation, entitled Speaking Bodies is a compilation of fourteen videos which explore such questions as, how does the body relate to the mouth and the mouth to the body? And is the voice always located in a single part of the body? The second video, which is currently in the last leg of its national tour, is composed of two parts: V is for Video: 1999, and V is for Video: Retrospective. V is for Video has been presenting student video art since 1983 in an annual Toronto festival.
This national tour provides an opportunity to examine the legacy of video art from artists who are now established in a Canadian (and international) art community, and from current students who are continuing the tradition. It is in this tradition, within the larger Canadian Art context, that we present this work. Video is an exciting and innovative artistic medium, whether the approach is conceptual or narrative, video mediates the body, cultural identity, memory and social ideology.
