Vicky Colombet, Edith Derdyk, Susan Harnett, Paul Moran, Robert Morris, Lucia Warck-Meister, Pierre Soulages and Shirley Paes Leme. Through different techniques and medium, the artists are experimenting not only with the radical opposition of the two “colorless" colors, but also their interaction and interdependance. In their works, black and white, preceeding any other colors, are the origin of light, the essence of line and the principle of depth and space.

“Black and white are the only two colors to be radically different from
the ones of the color spectrum: all other earthly hues, writes Herman
Melville, the sweet tinges of sunset skies and woods; yea, and the gilded
velvets of butterflies, and the butterfly cheeks of young girls; all these
are but subtile deceits, not actually inherent in substances, but only laid
on from without; so that all deified Nature absolutely paints like the
harlot…" - Pierre Soulages
Haim Chanin Fine Arts is pleased to present
Black and White Abstractions, an exhibition of works by artists including
Vicky Colombet, Edith Derdyk, Susan Harnett, Paul Moran, Robert Morris,
Luci'a Warck-Meister, Pierre Soulages, and Shirley Paes Leme, on view from
January 12 through February 25, 2006. An opening reception will be take
place at the gallery on Thursday, January 19, from 6 to 8 PM.
Black and White Abstractions attempts to explore the specific nature of
those two “radically different" colors. Through different techniques and
medium, the artists featured in the exhibition are experimenting not only
with the radical opposition of the two “colorless" colors, but also their
interaction and interdependance. In their works, black and white, preceeding
any other colors, are the origin of light, the essence of line and the
principle of depth and space.
They offer the possibility to reach the essence of landscape and nature in
Vicky Colombet’s new explorations on vellum, Susan Hartnett’s charcoal works
on paper, and Shirley Paes Leme’s “picuma" (suit) drawings; to work “in the
domain between thread, drawing and sculpture" (J. Angeline) in Edith Derdyk’
s prints; to loose the viewer in space and memory in Paul Moran poetic oils
on paper; to materialize light through the contrast or the reflection in
Pierre Soulages gouaches; to draw with shadows in one of Robert Morris
seminal felt installations; or to weave webs of infinite shades and layers
of greys in Luci'a Warck-Meister’s charcoal drawings.
Haim Chanin Fine Arts is located at 210 Eleventh Avenue, 2nd floor,
