Catharine Phelan will be exhibiting 40 new paintings through Valentine¹s week.
These highly desirable paintings express the artist¹s ongoing love affair
with the Mediterranean. Ranging in size from miniature to large landscapes
several metres in width, her adept and subtle use of colour and texture
flood the gallery with warmth and passion. Gargantuan sunflowers compete
with cascading ice cream coloured hillsides and delicate depictions of the
play of light on water. Informed yet imaginative, Phelan¹s paintings are an
intoxicating fusion of reality and the artist¹s inner life.
Born beside the sea in Portsmouth, Goldsmiths College graduate Catharine
Phelan lives and works in south London. She has exhibited widely in London
and abroad. The works in this exhibition represent a new confidence and
maturity in her painting style which is surely set to ripen in vintage
fashion.
My paintings are self portraits expressed through landscape. The colours
reflect my moods and emotions at the time of painting not unlike the melody
of a song.¹ Catharine Phelan.
