Entropia, by Juha Tolonen, explores the tensions and continuities between entropy and utopia in contemporary society.Although at times a humorous one, Downtown is a plea, on the part of Simon Cuthbert for us to look twice at the kinds of messages that our built urban environments are sending us.

Entropia explores the tensions and continuities between entropy and utopia in contemporary society. These sites often hold an uncertain and tenuous position in the urban fabric evoking feelings of anxiety and alienation, while also offering respite from the modern fetish for order and progress. Some sites remain untouched, while others are reordered in seemingly incongruous ways. While the pictures exist as formal documents, they are primarily intended as meditations of our own precarious position in modern life, and a moment of reflection on the ubiquity of entropy and the implausibility of utopia.

Although at times a humorous one, Downtown is a plea, on the part of Simon Cuthbert for us to look twice at the kinds of messages that our built urban environments are sending us. His architectural subjects rarely seek out fine examples or efficient city planning, on the contrary they examine the disparities and glitches that occur within these practices and point to the more compromised terrain of municipal space. He hopes to awaken us to the potential of this shared environment where common dialogue can link and inspire people. Text by Philip Watkins.
