Baltic stages its first group show by artists who live and work in the north east of England. Having just hosted British Art Show 6, You Shall Know Our Velocity is a timely take on the art on Baltic's doorstep. From those who have exhibited internationally, to recent graduates, this dynamic exhibition celebrates the talent of artists based in one of the most vibrant places for contemporary art in the UK.

The show takes in a broad range of works from photography, drawing and sculpture, to video and installation. The exhibition spills beyond the gallery with video works in the cafe' and entrance to BALTIC, as well as the Ground Floor Art Space.

The exhibition brings together a diverse range of works from paintings made by a mechanical machine, to work developed from the history of rave culture in the Lake District, a docu-drama about nuclear oblivion in Sheffield, to erotic animations. Images recognisable to north east visitors will include Fiona Crisp's haunting photograph from the empty stage of Newcastle's Theatre Royal and 'Sky', a short film by Alan Smith, combining footage of the artist moving around his rural environment of Allenheads.

"Baltic is proud to host an exhibition by some of the many talented artists living and working in the north east. I hope the show will demonstrate that fantastic art can be created on our doorstep, as well as elsewhere in the world." Peter Doroshenko, Baltic Director

"This exhibition is a fantastic opportunity for audiences in the north east to see work from world class artists based in our region in the most high profile of our visual arts galleries."

Mark Robinson, Executive Director, Arts Council England, North East
