comunicato stampa

artLab is pleased to present paintings and sculptures by Gunter Damisch, Thomas Jessen, Cornelia Schleime and Sebastian Weissenbacher.

'Arcadia' stands for a perfect landscape, a perfect existence. It is the idea of the land of milk and honey, where sheep and wolf live peacefully side by side (on what would they feed themselves?). Therefore, Arcadia has never existed and will never exist, but it still captures our dreams. Hence, Arcadia could also exist in reality, it could be a place we would love to go to. At the same time it is a vision of a dream life in peace and of spiritual friendship which could possibly turn into reality.

Et in Arcadia Ego: And myself in Arcadia! The one who says this is Death. At the end comes death - even in an immaculate world and life there is nothing we can do about it. Nothing is eternal, except time. Time begins instantly when men try to count it and ends in the moment of our death when we no longer take notice of it. Even death is not eternal. It only comes once, but to every single one of us. Death only exists as a phenomenon when we are conscious of it; therefore it also exists in Arcadia. Where there is beauty and wellbeing, we have to be sure of its passing and fading away. Beauty is terminal; the same goes for wellbeing and joy, and, fortunately, for sorrow and pain.

This exhibition, curated by Heiner Schepers, director of the Kunsthalle Lingen, will be shown, in a smaller version, in the artLab / Gallery Ernst Hilger, Vienna. It consists of paintings by the Berlin artist Cornelia Schleime, Thomas Jessen from Düsseldorf, as well as of paintings and sculptures by the Viennese artists Gunter Damisch and Sebastian Weissenbacher. A part of the artwork has especially been created for this exhibition, others were chosen according to the theme.
