Reflections from places unseen
Clapham Art Gallery is pleased to introduce Terry Taylor. Taylor has
been a practicing photographer and teacher in London and Bristol for
fifteen years, since graduating from Bournemouth and Poole College of
Art and Design in 1991.
Taylor's most recent collection consists of a group of landscape
photographs derived from walking in remote areas in Britain and Europe.
Each image is the result of an instinctive reaction to the artist's
immediate surroundings. As Taylor explains:
"I choose the places I photograph because of a particular feeling I get
when I get to a particular place in the landscape. I believe this
feeling comes from a synchronicity of perception of my cultural history;
ideas of idyll and ownership; instinct; experiential aesthetics; and,
especially in mountainous areas, the timeless perspective of geological
history".
These photographs are the result of multiple images taken from a single
viewpoint. Taylor takes a panoramic set of photographs which record the
horizontal and vertical peripheral view of a landscape. He then uses
digital technology to seamlessly knit the images together, arriving at a
subtly manipulated final image that captures the raw power inherent in
reality whilst conveying a slight oddity. Highly focused detail is
asserted and perspectives altered as the landscape undulates before us.
Mounted on aluminium and presented immaculately, the results are
powerful photographs that celebrate the natural environment at its most
commanding, embracing the full impact of the power of the sublime.
