'A retrospective' presents the full range of the artist's career from the early assemblages and small-scale "replicas" that first brought him to critical attention in Los Angeles in the late 50s and 60s to his various sculptural installations to the recent more complexly layered work that engage him today. Contemporary two exhibitions: Scott Hess with the 7 laughters of god and other paintings, Hillside Homes with the architecture of J. Lamont Langworthy.

The first retrospective of Richard Pettibone’s work in over twenty years, on exhibition at Laguna Art Museum will present the full range of the artist’s career from the early assemblages and small-scale “replicas" that first brought him to critical attention in Los Angeles in the late fifties and sixties to his various sculptural installations (based on his love of both Shaker furniture and Constantine Brancusi) to the recent more complexly layered work (“making anew" such modern masters as Mondrian and Ezra Pound) that engage him today. The exhibition premiered at the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania and then traveled to the Tang Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College.
The exhibition includes approximately 200 paintings and 15 freestanding sculptures. A 192-page color catalog will accompany this exhibition. The format will replicate in size and style the early issues of Artforum. Exhibition co-curator, Michael Duncan has written an essay tracking the development of Pettibone's long career, and co-curator Ian Berry offers an interview with the artist.
Richard Pettibone: A Retrospective is organized by Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach, California and The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York by curators Ian Berry and Michael Duncan.
F. Scott Hess
Featuring Los Angeles-based painter F. Scott Hess’s newest series, The Seven Laughters of God, this exhibition is accompanied by a 48-page fully illustrated exhibition catalog with an essay by renowned art critic Donald Kuspit. It is the first major solo show at museum or gallery in Southern California in five years.
The Seven Laughters series is based on an ancient Egyptian creation myth which tells the story of the creation of the world via a single “creator" god, who laughed seven times and created the seven lesser gods of Light, Firmament, Mind, Generation, Fate, Time, and Soul.
J. Lamont Langworthy
J. Lamont Langworthy’s contribution to the Laguna Beach architectural landscape helped to define a sculptural hillside aesthetic that further enhanced the city’s artistic tradition. Hillside Homes: The Architecture of J. Lamont Langworthy looks at his lasting contribution to the aesthetic of the city’s homes.
Beginning in 1960 Langworthy designed and built more than 27 homes, many of which were sited on affordable yet difficult to build hillside lots. He focused on instilling in each design a blend of function, budget, and the environment using materials such as redwood and copper. These hillside structures, often photographed by famed architecture photographer Julius Schulman gained recognition in many architectural journals and magazines.

Laguna Art Museum is located at 307 Cliff Drive in Laguna Beach. The Museum is open daily, including Monday holidays, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students. Children under 12 are admitted free.
