Deutsche Bank Collection meets Zaha Hadid

The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition "Tokyo Blossoms: Deutsche Bank Collection meets Zaha Hadid." This exhibition will feature about 150 of the most cutting-edge artworks from the more than 50,000 pieces in the Deutsche Bank Collection. Another feature of the exhibition is the participation of Zaha Hadid, who will be involved in the design of a unique installation space that takes into consideration the character of the museum.

The Deutsche Bank Collection, known as one of the finest corporate art collections in the world, was started in 1979, the same year the Hara Museum was founded. Since that time, the Deutsche Bank has regularly added to the collection works that range from the modern era to the ambitious creations of up-and-coming artists. It has displayed these works in its offices and branches under the motto, “Art at Work," sometimes in the face of fierce debate engendered by the art. The bank’s activity not only provides stimulation for their staff, it also supports artists, nurtures art lovers, and invigorates the art world.

The Hara Museum was originally a private residence whose owner was also a patron of the arts. The Hara Museum, which retains the charm of a mansion that was once the comfortable home of artworks in the past, will surely provide a new look to the artwork of the modern-day patron, the Deutsche Bank Collection.

Participation of Zaha Hadid

Another feature of the exhibition is the participation of Zaha Hadid, a leading architect whose compelling creativity has made her widely known, but whose works have been rarely shown in Japan till now. The exhibition title, Tokyo Blossoms, was in fact coined by her. The Gotenyama District, where the Hara Museum is located, is a famous cherry blossom-viewing spot, opened to the public by the Edo bakufu government during the Edo period. Against this historical background, Hadid will be designing an exhibition space inspired by the image of cherry blossoms fluttering down to a mansion that took shape as a result of the encounter between the East and West.

Zaha Hadid

Born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1950 and currently resides in London, UK. She received a degree in mathematics from the American University of Beirut and went to the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London to study architecture. After working with Rem Koolhaas in his Office for Metropolitan Architecture, Hadid established her own practice in London. In 2004, she became the first female recipient of the Pritzker Architecture prize. http://www.zaha-hadid.com
