Leblon and Zuffi investigate, with very precise and sharp attitude, the dark
side of the modernistic style and the utopian architecture, the subtle
anxiety connected to the very idea of order and discipline. Both artists
establish, by simple interventions, an emotional relation with the interior
spaces and the domestic environment, and are able to create a feeling of
uneasiness and imperceptible tension.
Thanks to the site-specific works of the two artists, Sparwasser_s space
will become the set of a short crime story, without any bloodshed.
The french artist Guillaume Leblon (1971) will present the
16 mm film "Villa Cavroix", (9 min., 2000).
The Villa, located in the north part of France, has been built in 1932 on
the project of architect Rob Mallet-Stevens, and abandoned in 1986. The film
documents a sensual and slow walking through the ruins of the Villa: only
interior spaces are visible, no total view is provided.
As other Leblon's works, "Villa Cavroix" is a bitter-sweet tribute to any
idea
of elegance and order, between nostalgia and critical consciousness.
"Pre" (2001) is a slide projection from Italian artist Italo Zuffi (1969).
It is another emotional and abstract way of approaching an architectural
space, documented through a few details (floors, doors, windows, etc..). The
images of the space are mixed with monochrome ones and lines from a short
text. It refers to a request done by a fictional character to another one,
to walk around the edges of a swimming pool, as to take confidence with the
space.
"Pre" suggests a problematic relation to every idea of site, by the tools of
a subtle vertigo and a slight hallucination.
Zuffi will also present two new pictures. They document moments of the
construction's process of a Dan Graham's pavilion: a group of workers is
gathered around a wooden structure. What's really going on here?
