The Jerwood Charity and Hales Gallery are pleased to announce IN BRIEF, a programme of shows which will run from January to July 2006 at the Jerwood Space. The four solo or collaborative shows have been selected by Paul Hedge
of Hales Gallery and each artist is a recent graduate or post-graduate from a British art school.
Hales Gallery is a leading commercial contemporary art gallery in London's east end, with an ongoing programme of shows by internationally established artists. However, Hales has also developed a reputation for nurturing new
and less well known artists. IN BRIEF continues Hales Gallery's and the Jerwood Charitable Foundation's longstanding commitment to working with innovative artists and gives them the opportunity to present a focused show
of their new work in a public space.
There has been no application process or criterion for this selection, only that each of the artists selected caught the eye of Paul Hedge as he looked around the British art school shows over the past couple of years. This new
season of exhibitions develops the strand of singular exhibits by young artists also selected by Paul Hedge and shown at Jerwood Space since 2003 in the Courtyard.
'BLOOD N FEATHERS' A.K.A LUCY STEIN & JO ROBERTSON met at art school in Glasgow and named their painting and performance group after a lyric from a song by Courtney Love's band, Hole (an early song called Burn Black). Subsequently they both went their separate ways, Joanne to the Slade and Lucy to Ateliers in Amsterdam. The show at Jerwood Space reunites their creative collaboration in a show where, as well as showing a selection of paintings and drawings made by both artists separately and hung side by side. A mural painted by Lucy is responded to by Jo who will perform her improvised songs in front of it.
Much of their work is focused around an intuitive response to each other's works in order to make progress with both the ideas and imagery. This revolves around their ongoing female bond and consequent approach to deconstructing femininity.
