The Iraqi Equation

The project focuses on the complex interplay of aesthetics and social and political situations in order to acquire a more precise knowledge of what is now happening in various areas of the Arab world. If the first and second parts centred on Beirut/Lebanon and Cairo/Egypt respectively, this third stage of the project turns its attention to Iraq.

Contemporary Arab Representations is a long-term project which includes presentations of works by authors from different disciplines (visual arts, architecture, literature, thought, film), seminars, performances and publications. The aim is to enable production, circulation and exchanges between the different cultural centres in the Arab world and the rest of the world. The project focuses on the complex interplay of aesthetics and social and political situations in order to acquire a more precise knowledge of what is now happening in various areas of the Arab world. If the first and second parts centred on Beirut/Lebanon and Cairo/Egypt respectively, this third stage of the project turns its attention to Iraq.
From the time of the Gulf War and post the invasion and occupation, the information that we receive from Iraq via the main media channels have to a large extent simplified and distorted representations and data concerning a political, social and cultural situation that is extremely complex. The Iraqi Equation does not offer an “exhibition" of modern or contemporary Iraqi art, but a platform for information exchange, encounter and debate, open to artists, film-makers, authors, analysts and activists able to throw light on the historical, political, social and cultural context which had led to the current situation - and on possible ways out of the daily nightmare lived by Iraqis today.
Present at the event will be Nuria Enguita Mayo, chief curator at Fundacio' Antoni Ta'pies, Catherine David, director of the project Contemporary Arab Representations, and a representation of the artists who took part in the project.
Contemporary Arab Representations is a long-term project directed by Catherine David, organised and produced by Fundacio' Antoni Ta'pies, Barcelona; Arteleku-Diputacio'n Foral de Gipuzkoa and Universidad Internacional de Andaluci'a-UNIA arteypensamiento. Contemporary Arab Representations. The Iraqi Equation has been produced in association with the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, and the centro de las artes de Sevilla, and has been made possible thanks to the support of the German Federal Cultural Foundation (Kulturstiftung des Bundes) and the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
