Drawings and Photographs

Patti Smith is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential contributors to music and poetry in the last 40 years. Since the 1960s she has made drawings, paintings and photographs that contain the lyrical characteristics of her peoms and songs. This exhibition which travels to the Model from the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, includes over ninety works spanning from the late 1960's to a series of new photographs made in 2006. The subject matter for her artwork stems from a number of autobiographical, literary and artistic incfluences including her close friend, the artist and photographer Robert Mappletorpe, British artist and poet William Blake and a very personal response in drawing to the tragic events of 9/11.

The exhibition is curated by John Smith, Assistant Director for Collections and Research at the Andy Warhol Museum. Patti Smith, South Tower Gems,

A series of complementary events will taking place on the opening weekend which will provide a unique opportunity for audiences to experience the full breadth of Patti Smith's artistic practice from music and poetry to drawing and painting.

"Like Andy Warhol, Patti Smith isn't an artist who is easily categorized. She moves fluidly through the genres of music, visual art, and language," says John Smith, exhibition curator and Assistant Director for Collections and Research at the Andy Warhol Museum. "Her work and her career defy the traditional boundaries of both the art and music worlds. To understand Smith's work is to understand the organic quality of what she does."
