Bendixen contemporary art is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work
by Danish artist Jens Thegler. For his first solo exhibition at the
gallery, Thegler will present a series of new, primarily large-scale
paintings based around the artificial dwelling we call a hotel. Typically
perceived as a secure, comfortable and neutral environment, Thegler
transforms this home away from hom into an alienating, oppressive and
claustrophobic space. Through his use of bright, often irrational, colors
and his characteristic warping of conventional perspective and depth,
Thegler plays with both our physical and emotional senses. In TheglerĀ¹s
world of storytelling, the viewer is drawn into a vivid scene that
unexpectedly reveals a darker, more ominous side.
Though filled with
melancholic moments and personal innuendos, the works nevertheless allow the
viewer to be drawn in and to make their own individual connections between
their private world and the implications within each painting.
A graduate of the Danish Royal Academy of Art, Jens Thegler is a previous
nominee for the prestigious Carnegie Art Award. He has had several graphic
novels published by Carlsen Publishing and his work was recently published
in the book "Blaek" (Politikens Forlag, 2006).
