The Art Gallery of Bishop's University is proud to present the
exhibition, Wavering Identities by Jacky G. Lafargue and
Louis Couturier, which will be held from April 4 to June 10,
2001. Wavering Identities is a public art flag installation that
has been exhibited in Brussels, Liège, Paris and Montreal. The flags focus
on how immigrant citizens regard their countries of origin and adopted lands.
"Wavering Identities is not sheltered from the storm; it addresses everyone
from the passer-by to the enlightened visitor and is made to capture our gaze
and reflective thought" (Robert Desbiens, director;
Canadian Cultural Centre).
The installation manipulates urban public space by playing,
not on an ideal of "integration", but on the unease or surprise
caused by redirecting familiar signs of communication
(those thrown together or strictly codified). This action has
been repeated in different countries, communities and
milieus in order to give a true dimension to the project, which does not claim
to pose questions of global importance or to evoke individual reactions.
Rather, the flags provoke collective local reactions that remind individuals of
their challenging group membership, however temporary
and artificial that membership may be.
The flags will be installed at various points throughout the
Bishop's University campus, both on the outside and inside
of some of the main buildings. The opening of the exhibition
will take place at the Art Gallery of Bishop's University on
Wednesday, April 4, 2001 from 5pm to 7pm.
