1980-2006. An identity established in the course of more than twenty-five years.

Over six hundred artists, collectives and musicians constitute the history of a pioneering space in the diffusion of contemporary art and a key part of the Barcelona scene. Memorial Metro'nom looks back on the evolution that has taken place since the 70s, when Tous made a decision to support the conceptual art that was too much for the galleries.

From the introduction into the space of the artist’s intimate paradises through books, cassettes and correspondence (Dieter Roth, 1981) or something as fashionable as the El Vibora comics in the same year, to installations based on forty tons of magazines, cars and grand pianos. (David Mach, Adding fuel to FIRE, 1987), or a veritable de'jeuner sur l’herbe, an arcadia to be walked over, filled with low-frequency sounds and 400 m2 of grass (J.P. Sonntag, 2000), or even the miscellaneous sovereignty of a boxing championship with video, sound and photography (Ana Busto,2000) as well as projects such as the Week of Experimental Music, it has always had the aim of increasing its frame of activity through conceptual and epistemological advances.

And all the time creating situations and experiences, the result of a reflexive analysis of international and emerging cultural phenomena. On the other side of the mirror, patronage and his desire to collect anything daring and nonconventional, a constant search and support for new artistic trends, always surrounding himself with people who have known how to create the basis for what Metro'nom is today. Like this he has continued to breathe life into a scenario that has been ahead of each era and achieved international recognition and prestige.

Memorial Metro'nom is a project that recognises all those people who have made such a major anniversary possible: an architectural space transformed with the testament of 150 photographs and the commemoration of 603 artists, as well as a record of the activities that have taken place in this former Modernist spice warehouse dating back to 1918, and recovered 66 years later by Rafael Tous.

Opening event with the presence of Rafael Tous and the acoustic installation Gran Hall by Vicens Vacca. De-collage of sounds, semantic-acoustic movements through drippings of the soundtrack of some long-lost spaghetti western. Acoustic sculptures that play with apori'a: anarchy as a beautiful form of order, action as representation of the invisible, repetitions that are never the same… in the recreation of a “special shower" or to cast a fantasy over the audience.

*Screening of the latest acquisition by the Rafael Tous collection. Marco Brambilla: an artist with a propensity to psychosomatic provocation, to vertigo and hypnosis, imposes the brutality of the image with: Sync and Halflife. In the three-channel video installation, the filmmaker radically transforms conditions for the expression of the image, hypertrophied tales of the cinematic imagination, creating a medium capable of establishing a connection between object and subject in the most devastating sense. The accelerated image-archive gives us an image of ourselves through excess. It allows the filmmaker to discover himself as a mechanical device and enormous constructor of tales. Throughout June-July in the main space.

Parallel activities as part of Memorial Metro'nom:

Konic thtr An artistic platform dedicated to contemporary creation focusing on the use of interactive technology will present The Extended Stage.

The performance is the fruit of a research project carried out at Metro'nomLab (Metro'nom_Fundacio' Rafael Tous d’Art Contemporani) and the creativity centre L’Animal a l’Esquena (Celra').

Opening: 20th June, 8 p.m.
