Aleksandra Mir's 'Living & Loving' project is an ongoing series of biographies, published in an oversized format, and distributed free-of-charge. The third in the series is a biography of a young artist called Mitchell Wright, who recently moved from Knoxville, Tennessee to New York. 'Living & Loving No. 3: The Biography of Mitchell Wright' is distributed by White Columns. Free copies are available from the gallery.
The Bulletin Board: Mitchell Wright
To coincide with the launch of 'Living & Loving No. 3: The Biography of Mitchell Wright' we will present works by Mitchell Wright in our bulletin board project space. This will be Mitchell Wright's first solo exhibition in New York.
Gallery: Luke Fowler 'Pilgrimage From Scattered Points'
In our main gallery space we will present the U.S. debut of Luke Fowler's celebrated 'Pilgrimage From Scattered Points' (2005) - a film about the English composer Cornelius Cardew (1936-1981) and the Scratch Orchestra (1968 - 1973). Cardew formed the orchestra with Michael Parsons and Howard Skempton in 1968 and published their draft constitution in "The Musical Times" in June 1969. The constitution set out the framework, which would dominate the orchestra's musical work for the first half of its existence. It proposed a fluid community where students, office workers, amateur musicians and some professional composers would gather together for performance, music making and edification. Fowler's film explores the internal contradictions and struggles of the Scratch Orchestra through first person interviews, recent and archival footage and predominantly unreleased music. Luke Fowler (b. 1978) lives and works in Glasgow. His work was recently included in the Tate Triennial, Tate Gallery, London; and at The Modern Institute, Glasgow (both 2006).
White Room: Paul Bulter
For his White Room exhibition the Winnipeg-based artist Paul Butler will show a group of recent collage works. In addition to his activities as an artist and curator (which includes his famed 'Collage Parties') Butler is also the Director of Winnipeg's Other Gallery, representing the work of a newly emergent and dynamic generation of Canadian artists.
White Room: Mitzi Pederson
For her first New York solo exhibition the San Francisco-based artist Mitzi Pederson will show a discrete group of recent collage works alongside new sculptural works. Mitzi Pederson has had a recent solo show at Ratio 3 in San Francisco, where her work will soon be part of a three-person show with Vincent Fecteau and Patrick Hill.
Project: David Dunlap
In our project space the Iowa-based artist David Dunlap will create a new sculptural installation. Additionally for the exhibition's opening night Dunlap's mobile "Vehicle of Marriage Gallery" will be parked outside the gallery on Horatio Street.
