Observations

Clapham Art Gallery is pleased to announce Louise Lawton’s fourth one person show. Since graduating in 2001 Lawton has achieved considerable success in London and internationally. She has become highly regarded for her observational charcoal drawings on gesso.

By concentrating on the urban environment and specifically the populations within it, Lawton has revealed a consistent interest in group movement and the subsequent patterns formed in public places. As the artist states:

‘I am particularly interested in rush hour as the flow and capacity of the crowds emphasises the patterns and pace of the city. I am interested in the counterweight of this pace, looking at queues and the amount of waiting that takes place. Whether the figures in my work are moving or not, I aim to create paintings that are in some way philosophical, that have a kind of silence or stillness about them.’

During the last eighteen months Lawton has turned towards the physical fabric of the city itself, in particular that of New York. By applying her unparalleled draftsmanship to the cityscape, Lawton has created a series of obsessively rendered pieces. The centrepiece of this show, titled ‘New York’, is the largest of this series to date at 70x70cm. It is characteristically cropped and consists of a composite image derived from multiple photographs taken from a single viewpoint on the 56th floor of the Empire State building. The result is a highly dynamic work that features impossible, undulating perspectives that lead the viewer over and through the Manhattan skyline.

Current Exhibition: 'New Figurative Realism' - Tessa Farmer, Sebastian Gogel, Juliana Amaral Leite, Cathy Lomax, Sarah McGinity, Mark McGowan, Gavin Nolan, Tim Parr, John Stark, Stella Vine, Corinna Weiner. Ends June 24.
