Thus both artists convey the sense of rarity that the experience of certain real or constructed places offers and invite us to share anew in the emotion of the ‘fantastic’ at work in the earthly world.
Vincent Lamouroux (1974) and Geert Goiris (1971) use distinct mediums, sculpture and
photography, to deploy notions of time and space, landscape and composition,
representation and abstraction, fiction and reality. They revisit a formal language
extending from 1960s minimalist sculpture to the architectural and space-age utopias
of the same period.
Sculptures and photography
Vincent Lamouroux produces sculpture that is both organic and constructed, based for
the most part on simple geometric forms. For the Grand Cafe, he presents a
sculptural and cinematic system that transforms the space into a pure, dense
‘vertigo’ inciting bodily and imaginary movement.
Physical displacement and travel play a large part in Geert Goiris’ photographic
practice. Deserted expanses marked by man’s passage, interiors impregnated by the
composition and lighting of 17th century Flemish painting, improbable abandoned
architecture... his photographs show us unreal, faraway places whose existence and
closeness are simultaneously confirmed. The photographed scenes seem as if freed
from gravity and provoke the effect of suspended time and space.
Thus both artists convey the sense of rarity that the experience of certain real or
constructed places offers and invite us to share anew in the emotion of the
‘fantastic’ at work in the earthly world.
