Zhou Tiehai

ShanghART Gallery, Shanghai

ShanghART is pleased to invite you to the exhibition 'The artist isn't here', a double exhibition in Shanghai + New York. The exhibitions include works (aribrush on canvas) from Zhou Tiehai's 'Placebo' and 'Tonic' series. The seducing and ironic works of the 'Placebo' series - images of Joe Camel etc. -, are the result of Zhou Tiehai's 10 year long investigation into, questioning of and also way into the world of Western art. The 'Tonic' series is Zhou Tiehai's more recent exploration of China's own artistic tradition, the works are still airbrushed, beautiful, but the relation to the underlying original is much more direct, unbroken.

'The artist isn't here'
(a double exhibition in Shanghai + New York)

Zhou Tiehai started artistic activities in the mid 1990s when Chinese contemporary art began to attract Western journalists and curators. He observes situations of the international system of contemporary art today in which Chinese artists are invited to participate.

Artist's words:
A lot of Chinese artists make work that underscores a kind of "Chineseness." At first glance, I believe people don't see anything Chinese about my work. But all of my work reflects my creative life in Shanghai. As I mentioned before, all the thoughts that I have had about art till now are reflected in my work. (Excerpted and edited from a slide lecture given in Chinese on October 24 2000 in The Hall at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art.)

"Zhou Tiehai: The artist isn't here" is a double exhibition, which opens at the same date at ShanghART gallery, Shanghai and at the ISE Cultural Foundation in New York (curated by Toshio Shimizu).

'Zhou Tiehai uses art as an expanded 'medium' that orbits spirally around the triangle artist-gallery-museum, and the associated expectations'. Harald Szeemann, curator of the Venice Biennale.

Zhou Tiehai has exhibited in China and abroad (Venice Biennale 1999, Cities on the Move, Hara Museum etc.)

The works of both exhibitions are documenten on web
