Contemporary Lithuanian performance art was born in-step with the Independence
movement, at the end of the 1980s and was one of the liveliest manifestations of
emerging contemporary art through the middle of the next decade. The first
international performance art festival "Body Dimension" was held at the CAC, Vilnius
in 1995, the second installment "Dimension 0" (1997) was even more ambitious and
presented artists from 14 different countries. It was intended to develop as an
ongoing biennial initiative, but was stymied, and it has taken nine years for the
third 'biennial' to reappear.
The third "Dimensija 1" International Performance Art Festival revives this
tradition. It aims to present newest developments in Lithuanian performance art, to
investigate how it has changed in the period between events, and to provide an
international context for these changes. Along with new performances from Lithuanian
artists there will be presentations by artists from: Estonia, Byelorussia, Czech
Republic, Switzerland, Great Britain, France and Japan.
