Zoo Art Fair identifies and supports young commercial and non-commercial art organisations on an international platform. Exhibitors include galleries, project spaces, artist collectives, curatorial groups and publications. Zoo Art Fair is a non-profit enterprise, sponsored by established collectors, galleries, arts businesses and public funders.
In its first year, 2004, the fair showcased 26 under 3 year old local London spaces and welcomed 8,000 visitors, selling over £500,000 worth of work. In 2005, 28 under 4 year old UK exhibitors were invited and over 10,000 visitors attended with over £1 million in sales. In 2006 we showcase 46 under 5 year old exhibitors, including 31 from the UK and 15 from Mexico, Berlin and Los Angeles.
For collectors, curators, critics, dealers, artists and art enthusiasts, the Zoo Art Fair remains a considered introduction to the next generation of art talent and an in-depth survey of their emerging markets.
This year’s Portfolio brings together the work of thirteen Latin American artists as a collection
of editioned prints, photographs and multiples contined in a specially designed presentation
box. Selected by Adriano Pedrosa, co-curator of Bienal de Sao Paulo, and published by Fair
sponsor Archeus, the Portfolio represents a cross section of the best emerging art from
across the continent.
Each piece has been commissioned for the box and is by an up-and-coming artist already
enjoying some success, who has having been deliberately selected as someone to watch out
for. Each commission is typical of their work though in many cases it will be the first time
they have made editions. Latin America is one of the most exciting and interesting
international rising markets, with the inclusion of many Latin artists in Biennales and
institutional shows worldwide, and the purchase of their work by important local and
international collections. The ongoing establishment of artist run spaces and commercial
galleries throughout the continent is ensuring the continuing high profile of Latin art.
The Portfolio is published in an edition of 30 and will be launched at Zoo Art Fair 2006
A Rachmaninoff’s publication in association with Zoo Art Fair, the new art considers some
recent developments in contemporary art. In addition to newly commissioned pieces from a
range of established and new writers working from bases within and outside the UK, the new
art features images that reflect many aspects of contemporary practice.
In examining the background for change within the ‘emergent’ scene, the new art discusses
individual as well as institutional factors that herald shifts in the context of making and
thinking about art; the book takes a specialised view of the motivations and dynamics that
underscore contemporary art practice. the new art also foregrounds views from a wide range
of the professionals involved in contemporary art: from the ideas of emerging artists to the
attitudes and influence of writers, curators and dealers. Issues include: appropriation;
melancholy; “spectres of the past"; contemporary elaboration or staging of exhibitions
involving video and installation (with reference to painting); visual and language intersections
in artists’ works; the value of art fairs; the significance of works which explicitly involve
themselves with the circumstance of their production and consequence of their dissemination; the slight denigration of performance and the reinstatement of forms of satire;
“futurology", “lacunae", “ellipses" and so on.
Artists and projects discussed include: Tomas Saraceno, John Bock, Doug Fishbone, Tino
Sehgal, Anne Bean, Man in the Holocene, pablo internacional magazine, Jonathan Monk,
Rirkrit Tiravanija, Bonnie Camplin, Steven Claydon, Los Super Elegantes.

The Hut Project Escort Agency
The Hut Project Escort Agency appropriates the mechanism of the guided art-tour,
commissioning artists, writers and curators to escort visitors around exhibitor booths at the
Zoo Art Fair using the art it displays as source material for a new artwork. Each tour will
constitute one work in the overall editioned series titled “The Hut Project Escort Agency" and
will be authenticated by a signed certificate.
While existing commercial tour models operate merely as an aid to sales or as introductory
service for the uninitiated, The Hut Project Escort Agency is designed to provide a platform
for cultural producers to respond critically to the phenomenon of the art fair, and the state of
contemporary art at large in a manner aligned with their practice. Facilitating intimate contact
with small audience groups and Escorts, The Hut Project Escort Agency is designed to
create direct engagements with works on display through the subjective view of the Escort,
creating an artwork that constitutes a unique experience. Proposing that the key role of any
artist/curator/writer is to articulate a position in relation to the field of contemporary cultural
production, the project sets up a multi-tiered mediatory structure between a key mode of art
distribution - the art fair - its audience, the Escorts, and The Hut Project itself.
Escorts confirmed so far are: Reza Aramesh, Dave Beech, Mark Boulos, Bill Furlong, Sophie
Hope, Kelly Large, John Reardon, Rob Tufnell
Tours are available on all public days of the Fair and can be attended by up to four people.
Each tour is offered at £250.
