From Matisse to Hans Bellmer, Fenosa to Saura or Michel Journiac, this exhibition focuses on unknown works by contemporary artists, each of which presents the artist's perception of the body, either through an innovative style or an original technique. These different works and artists together, show the evolution of the body as a subject over the last century.
Representation and Use of the Body in Art
From Matisse (1869-1954) to Hans Bellmer (1902-1975),
Fenosa (1899-1988) to Saura (1930-1998) or Michel Journiac
(1935-1995), this exhibition focuses on unknown works by
contemporary artists, each of which presents the artist's
perception of the body, either through an innovative style or
an original technique.
The Portuguese artist Jose' de Guimaraes (born in 1939)
uses neon light to analyse the cultural mimesis of the human
figure. Thierry Farcy (born in 1965), is both a doctor and an artist.
Biology is therefore an integral part of his approach to the body,
which is liberated from any emotion or pathos.
Sissi (born in 1977) shows how bodily organs can be presented
through abstract sculptures.
Barmak Akram (born in 1966), from Afghanistan, will show previously
unseen works on paper which give birth to a completely new phytomorphic
perspective. Shadi Ghadirian (born in 1974), a young Iranian photographer,
will exhibit thought-provoking images which unveil how the female body
is controlled and constrained in Iran. Debesh Goswami (born in 1965),
an Indian artist, will exhibit photographs presenting his view of the
physical body as an ephemeral envelope for the spirit; his thought-
provoking works encourages us to look within.
The gallery aims to weave these different works and artists together,
thus showing the evolution of the body as a subject over the last
century.
