Los Angeles based artists stretch those laws and present some of their own. Mitchell Friedman, Manfred Menz, Lothar Schmitz, Carrie Ungerman and Melinda Smith Altshuler address social, environmental and psychological circumstance in the landscape.
Sarah Lee Artworks & Projects presents “Contrary," a curated group exhibition in which five Los Angeles-based artists stretch the laws of nature and present some of their own. Mitchell Friedman, Manfred Menz, Lothar Schmitz, Carrie Ungerman and Melinda Smith Altshuler address social, environmental and psychological circumstance in the landscape.
Mitchell Friedman is a painter and printmaker who constructs his own earthscapes with a delightfully ominous presence and a bit of a Dr. Suessian sensibility.
Manfred Menz digitally erases the man made portions of well-known western icons leaving only the framework of the natural landscape. In these striking color photos he allows the remaining natural aspects to take place of the familiar.
Lothar Schmitz’ sculptures reconfigure and question corporate landscape elements using man-made materials. His topiary-like treatment of landscape alludes to the accelerating pace of ecological change and genetic mutation. He draws experience from both his art and physics background. Schmitz is a past Los Angeles Cultural Affairs COLA Individual Artist Grant recipient and a physicist.
Melinda Smith Altshuler uses photo imagery in a photo etching technique on panels made from translucent or paper from teabags resulting in an ethereal study of shelters to address conditions of continuous change.
Carrie Ungerman has created large-scale landscapes “drawn" with the rub-on landscape elements previously used by architects. These lyrical works reference traditional Japanese landscape brush paintings. Ungerman is a present Los Angeles Cultural Affairs COLA Individual Artist Grant recipient.
