Personal show

For its first show of 2007, Chung King Project is pleased to announce the US debut of Leipzig artist Rigo Schmidt.

Rigo Schmidt’s small, finely worked formats are reminiscent of the antiquated atmosphere of natural history museums. He finds his subjects where nature and reality have already been filtered: photographs from his Eastern German school books, obscure paintings or museum showcases. From there, Rigo Schmidt looks back at two lines of development that affect his perception as a painter: the evolution of humanity as part of the surrounding nature, and humanity’s attempt to distinguish itself from its environment by the means of its own culture and science. The observation of observation lies in his biased reproductions reflecting our current consciousness and, ultimately, highlighting the latent ethnocentrism of our Western cultures.

Born in 1974, Rigo Schmidt studied painting at the Hochschule fur Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig under the direction of Professor Arno Rink. After completing his studies in 2004, he has had exhibitions in Berlin, London, Leipzig and Sao Paulo.
