Paulina Lasa & Alex Dorfsman
New York City: Art&Idea presents two simultaneous solo exhibitions,
I'm Gonna Change the World: Paulina Lasa (curated by Claudia
Arozqueta) and It's Almost Real, Isn't It?: Alex Dorfsman.
This will be the first solo exhibition in New York City for Paulina Lasa
and Alex Dorfsman, both natives of Mexico City.
Sombrillas Alex Dorfsman, 2006
Paulina Lasa is determined to change the world. She takes a pro-active
and intentionally naive approach to transforming her urban
environment which is infected with social malaise, bureaucratic red tape,
and almost imperceptible abuses that take place on a daily basis. Her
multi-media attempt at changing the world through video work, drawings,
light boxes, and a special performance is a refreshing and welcome
strategy. On display will be A Month in Mexico City or Why Can't I
be Michael Moore?, a prescient documentary that examines her
malfunctioning surroundings.
Concurrently, an exhibition of Alex
Dorfsman's photographs will be presented. Dorfsman
classically composed images of natural simulacra comprise his ongoing
project, It's Almost Real, Isn't It? The artist pairs real
landscapes with their representations in his photograph of a palm
tree sprouting in front of a wall mural of palm trees—in order to
question the viewer’s perception. A catalogue of Dorfsman's
photographs published by Diamantina will accompany the exhibition.
