Taking as its starting point the increasingly xenophobic reaction of South Africans to
'foreigners', whether migrants, refugess, or asylum seekers, 'Kwere kwere' is an
exploration of the relationship between migration and identity. More specifically, the
show, curated by Rory Bester, tackles the impact of migration on identities of
strangeness. "The ways in which we make and maintain borders, the ways in which we
undertake cross-border journeys as migrants, refugess and asylum seekers, the sense of
displacement we feel in a strange place and the sense of belonging and hone that we
forge in a strange lands are four ways in which migration and identity play themselves
out".
Installed in the atmospheric Block B of the Castle, 'Kwere kwere' will feature the projects
of 24 artists, filmmakers, documentary photographers and photojournalists, and promises
to continue the tradition of providing a provocative and challenging experience for
viewers established by earlier shows in this venue.
