New Paintings

Vauney Strahan lives and works in Dublin, Studied History of Art in Trinity College, and went on to study Fine Art (Painting) at City and Guilds of London, graduating in 2006. It was while studying at the City of Guilds London that the ideas for this new body of work began to develop. This is Vauney Strahans first solo exhibition at the Talbot Gallery.

As human beings we are constantly navigating spaces of different realms simultaneously. This activity is done both consciously and unconsciously. We weave around our personal fragment of life’s tapestry on a daily basis. In doing so we are consciously engaged with the feel and texture of our physical world. What interests the artist is the simultaneous navigation of spaces less tangible than this physical realm, this outer landscape. The inner landscape: the perceptual architecture of the mind, the emotional and spiritual realms, these are all spaces of perpetual weaving, meandering and folding.

In Strahans work she investigates the movement and feel of both inner and outer landscape. Her concern is with the elements in the make-up of each and the dialogue between them. She questions weather we can separate one from the other, or are they forever metamorphosing or emigrating from one condition to another? Inner/outer, status/fluidity, surface/depth. This didactic nature of our existence echoes throughout the artists work. Strahan enjoys the contrast of organic and in-organic forms. The contrast of unconscious, intuitive mark making against conscious, controlled execution, hard edged abstraction with baroque flam bounce and gestures.

The folds of the baroque and to what they might allude can adequately sum up they essence of what this artists work tries to achieve.
