A monthly series of thematically focused exhibitions, highlighting specific aspects of Lacy's vast and varied artistic oeuvre. This first event series presents his figurative art, featuring an in-depth look at the artist's paradigm-shattering approach to the male nude.
The Nude Reconsidered
Cognoscenti of the Los Angeles art scene will recall the curatorial splash, heard the summer of 2006, when Lev Moross Gallery presented the dramatic lifetime retrospective of California-based artist and master colorist, Ernest Lacy. Fresh off the heels of that memorably ambitious introduction, which featured more than 100 of the artist’s best paintings, watercolors and pastels produced over the last 50 years, we are pleased to announce the first in a series of more intimate considerations of Ernest Lacy’s many moods and technical explorations.
On March 17th, 2007, beginning with a 5:00 pm artist’s reception, Lev Moross Gallery will launch a special monthly series of thematically focused exhibitions, highlighting specific aspects of Ernest Lacy’s vast and varied artistic oeuvre. This first event of the 2007 series presents Lacy’s figurative art, featuring an in-depth look at the artist’s paradigm-shattering approach to the male nude.
Lev Moross Gallery is delighted to represent the complete works of Ernest Lacy, a prolific and multi-talented septuagenarian master in the Cezanne tradition, whose ingenious use of color to depict natural and figurative subject matter conveys an equal measure of fluency with oils, acrylics, watercolors, and pastels.
Perhaps more gratifying, Lacy combines his fresh approach to color with an astonishingly fluid draftsmanship. In an ironic twist, it is precisely Lacy’s rigorous pursuit of academic excellence in drawing, a commitment to competency reminiscent of the old masters, which has provided him the freedom to render ordinary life, whether desert landscapes, garden scenes, Central American villages or the nude human form, as if we are seeing it for the first time.
