Five Myles, New York

Emily Feinstein's small structures, houses, boardwalks, diving boards and swings, are inspired by an abandoned beach resort and amusement park. Built by hand, these disarmingly simple constructions sit on tabletops in the gallery, and an unused diving board without its pool hovers on the floor. Although the structures are playful and dreamlike, a sense of absence and abandon prevails. Out of one of the houses comes the sound of glee and delight from a young girl who is washing her hair and is no longer there, recorded by Ken Montgomery. In spite of the wistfulness and nostalgia to this work, Feinstein, at the same time, celebrates the small things and details that surround us. She most recently exhibited 125 works on paper at the Kentler International Drawing Space in Brooklyn.

In Juana Valdes' work Pleasure Beach can be interpreted as a Utopian destination. In her wall installation images of new and old maps and of old sailing ships used at the time of Columbus' encounter with the New World, centuries collide and overlap one another. These images glide along the wall seemingly guided on their journey by a large, billowing gauze sail floating through the space. This journey is experienced with a case of amnesia in which all the images are layered one on top of the other, evoking a sense of disorientation and displacement. Valdes, who came to the US from Cuba, has an innate understanding of the imagery of migration and the story these images tell without words. She uses historical references to explore transcultural movements through memory. Her fleet of porcelain origami boats is presently in the traveling exhibition Multiplicity: Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture.

On the project wall the photographer Robbin Taylor Peirce exhibits excerpts from her portfolio of sepia toned triptychs of elderly friends caught in moments of play.
