Strings; collaborations with chaos

Emerging Los Angeles Artist Gary Frederick Brown focuses on a body of work titled "Strings; collaborations with chaos". The works include monotype and mixed media sculpture. He is enamored with "String Theory", which is the foundation of the "Grand Unification Theory" of physics, which proposes that all matter in the universe is composed of vibrating oscillating threads measuring 1 trillionth of a centimeter in length. He conjectures that in a fractal sense we are to our planet as the cells in our body are to us, and similarly the planets in our solar system to the galaxy, galaxy to universe, etc. ", Brown envisions God existing in the sub-molecular realm. Venturing to take it one step further, he entertains the possibility that the super strings communicate on a sub-molecular level resulting in Karmic ripples in our reality pool .

Most of Brown's work is done on a monotype printing press which he designed and built. He's passionate about creating compelling images employing materials that through their structural and textural qualities introduce random elements that tend to culminate in controlled chaos. The effects are accomplished in many ways which include: the use of solvents and the separation of yarn and other fibrous materials into individual strands and loosely gathered groups and their deliberate placement prior to printing. Each print may require several runs through the press. Once the printing stage is complete he often modifies his work with charcoal, pastels, or ink. The resultant monotypes tend to convey his imagined vision of multi-dimensionality and the sub-microscopic realm of quantum physics as well as planets, galaxies, nebulas and the "stuff" of the universe.

A life changing experience in 1991 altered Brown's reality. He found himself more aware and interested in nature's minute details, almost as though seeing the world through new eyes. This vitalized awareness led to creations in mixed media and found objects "Arte Povere". He found himself drawn to copper, rusting metal and driftwood, which he binds together with copper wire or staples. Artistic creation had become his celebration of life.

During Summer 2004, in Florence , Italy, Brown received instruction in the challenging historical art of monotype by master artist/printmaker Ruth Weisberg, Dean of the USC Roski School of Fine Arts. His studies with Ruth Weisberg continue. Brown's attraction to monotype interestingly coincides with the printmaking process which his grandfather Frederick Foster Brown, an accomplished block print artist in Boise, Idaho; favored in the early 20th century.
